Insurance carriers are expanding telematics and app-embedded web contact, according to Keynova Group's Q1 2025 edition of its Mobile Insurance Scorecard.

Progressive and GEICO tied for first in overall mobile user experience. Geico won in mobile app and Progressive won for its mobile web experience. State Farm was third overall and second in app, third in mobile web.

Keynova analyzes the mobile apps and mobile websites of the top 12 U.S. auto and property insurance carriers.

Beth Robertson, managing director, Keynova Group, told Digital Insurance in an emailed response that GEICO and Progressive are among the 42% of carriers that embed accident-detecting telematics. The two also provide vehicle maintenance tools in-app.

Robertson said: "GEICO and Progressive actively focus on regular upgrades to the digital experience of their mobile customers across a range of actions that might be conducted by prospects and policyholders using their mobile channels. They also focus on educational content to build digital use and understanding of relevant insurance topics. These practices could help other carriers enhance the value of their digital assets."

The findings show an increase in the use of app-embedded browsers to broaden content available within an app. One third of the analyzed carriers have added an in-app browser.

Robertson said in a press release: "Framing web content within an app to streamline access to information and resources and integrating enhanced telematics tools into primary servicing apps are key actions that continue to build the value of carriers' mobile apps. By strategically upgrading mobile features and integrating device capabilities, carriers can expand the use of mobile interfaces while increasing policyholder satisfaction."

There has also been an extension of telematics capabilities and leveraging existing mobile device features to facilitate insurance policy and acquisition actions, according to the results. One third of carriers have also added smart mobile keyboards in policy change quotes.
