Daniel Demetri has always been interested in the combination of finance and technology, even before it was called fintech.

“The idea that technology can shape the course of business, that’s a new idea,” says Demetri, who is the CEO and founder of Trellis, a B2B2C digital solutions insurtech with an API platform, Savvy, for comparing insurance policies, which the company launched in 2020.

“I started seeing how we could use technology as solutions to financial services problems,” he says.

Demetri previously worked at Google and at Earnest, a student loan provider and financial services educator, where he led product management. He later co-founded States Title, a title insurance technology company that is now Doma; the company announced a SPAC merger last year.

“I devoted my career to helping consumers navigate complex financial decisions using tech to simplify and make them feel more comfortable and secure in their futures,” he says.

Demetri started Trellis to get involved in the auto and home insurance industry because he noticed how complex it was for consumers.

“This category was confusing and tech could help power better decisions to give folks a light,” Demetri says.

Trellis is currently partnering with agencies, insurers, financial institutions, fintech apps and car service networks. The company plans to bring its technology to more people and institutions, especially those that want to extend their business into insurance. Additionally, Trellis is in talks with larger insurers about using the technology to sell insurance on their websites more efficiently.

Demetri says for decades, consumers have met in person with agents for quotes and policy comparisons, but online that isn’t happening.

“Customers have to self-serve and manually compare and get their own quotes,” Demetri says. “That’s why we see a huge supply and demand gap, shopping online but not buying online. I think it is there because customers are struggling to configure the quote online and compare it to what they have. … We’ve seen a decade of the same in terms of, you go online, put information in and you get phone calls or emails–there is an ability to digitize and virtualize.”

In June 2021, Trellis announced it had raised $10 million in Series A funding led by QED Investors with participation from existing investors NYCA Partners and General Catalyst. The funding reportedly went to hiring, partnership expansion and product development, according to a press release.
